Description
Half Tung Oil & Half Citrus Solvent
A perfect blend of Pure Tung Oil and natural food-grade thinner. No more mixing needed! This is one part Pure Tung Oil mixed with one part Citrus Solvent. Most projects require the thick viscosity of Pure Tung Oil to be thinned in order to soak into the surface. Perfect for small to large projects.Pure Citrus Solvent is available HERE if you choose to buy separately and mix yourself.
Available in the following sizes:
- PINT (16 oz) - Covers 50 sq. feet per coat
- QUART (32 oz) - Covers 100 sq. feet per coat
- GALLON (128 oz) - Covers 400 sq. feet per coats
In most cases, pure Tung Oil is too thick to penetrate sufaces. By thinning with the natural solvent, the oil is able to penetrate deeper into the material.
This 1:1 ratio is great for food safe projects like cutting boards, table tops and wood kitchen items. Half & Half is also the right mix for raw wood floors, walls, concrete, terracotta clay pots, slate, and outdoor furniture.
How to Finish a Wooden Countertop
Application Instructions for Finishing Countertops & Butcher Blocks
The Half & Half pre-thinned version of Pure Tung Oil and Natural Solvent makes a perfect combination for finishing countertops and butcher blocks naturally.Pure Tung Oil's matte finish looks great on furniture, but if a glossy finish is preferred you will need to buff and wax the finish, or use polymerized tung oil or a formulated tung oil based product.
Apply the mixed Half & Half with a brush over the whole surface. Apply coat after coat until the wood has absorbed the oil and will not accept anymore (the wood will absorb the oil until it is saturated). You will be able to tell when the wood has absorbed the correct amount of oil when you see the mixture sit on the surface, rather than penetrate into the wood as it did in previous coats. At this point, wait 45 minutes to 1 hour in order to see any dry spots that may appear. If dry spots occur, brush additional finish until the wood is uniformly glossy. THIS MAY TAKE SEVERAL HOURS.
Again, when you notice the wood is not taking any more of the mixture, and all dry spots are covered, you will wipe all excess oil off. Use firm pressure and wipe all standing puddles/loose oil off of the surface. YOU ARE DONE FOR DAY 1.
DAY 2
Feed the wood again until it puddles. Let the 50/50 mixture sit on the surface to penetrate when it seems no more will absorb wipe off the excess. Watch the wood counter top for seeping over the next 5-7 days. Wipe off any seepage with clean rags. Light buff the surface for the next week or so. The Pure Tung Oil takes 15-30 days to fully cure. During this time you can still use the top. Just do not leave absorbent materials like paper or placemats on the countertop. Keep dishes and bowls from sitting overnight. However, you can still use and entertain while the oil dries. Just be sure to remove any items from sitting on the surface for long periods of time.
COATING THE UNDERSIDE OF THE COUNTER
For under the counter, you can do one or two coats of 50/50. Two coats is plenty. Coating the underside helps to even out the absorption of moisture into the wood and slows down expansion and contraction.
Maintenance
To maintain the counter top, make a solution of 2 parts Citrus Solvent to 1 part Pure Tung Oil. Apply this real thin with a rag. Do this maintenance coat when you feel the wood is dry and absorbing water from cleaning. Maintenance coats should be allowed to dry a day or two. Then you can go back to full use again.Put used rags outside and hang up to dry before disposing in the trash.
